Homeopathy is beautiful in its logic and simplicity. It is based on the ancient healing principle of the law of similars or ‘like cures like’.

scalesLike cures like

This principle states that a substance that causes a set of symptoms when given to a healthy person can relieve the same symptoms when caused by disease.

As Newton’s law states, every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The body or mind reacts as a set of old-fashioned weighing scales—when tipped one way it then swings to the other before finding its equilibrium (for example, the blood sugar crash you feel several hours after the sugar rush from eating a chocolate bar or the energy slump after the buzz of a strong coffee as worn off). It’s the same with our reaction to medicines. Conventional medicines have their primary action against the illness—but the secondary action of the body is in the same direction as the disease.

Helping your body heal itself

In homeopathy, we give a remedy that that works in the same direction as the disease, but the lasting effect is the secondary reaction that helps move the body back to health. This is because symptoms are the body’s attempts to heal itself. And homeopathy supports this action rather than blocks it. For example, with flu, the mucus in your nose and throat are the body’s attempt to flush out the virus. The raised temperature is a reaction to toxins, but also the body’s method of making the environment less suitable for the microbes. The correct homeopathic remedy is one that is capable of producing the exact same symptoms, so enabling a speedy recovery. Alternatively, with conventional medicines you can dry up excess mucus or bring a temperature down. And while this brings temporary relief, it goes against the body’s efforts to overcome the virus.

Just a little = a potent mix

The other key homeopathic principle is that of serial dilutions. The process of repeated dilution and succussion is called potentisation, and the more a remedy is potentised, the higher the homeopathic dose. The benefit of highly diluted medicines is not only the absence of side-effects, but also the fact that they can be used safely alongside conventional medicines.
